AOL Founder Steve Case and Rise of the Rest Visit Fattmerchant Headquarters

Our team at Fattmerchant was thrilled to be chosen as a stop on the Rise of the Rest Road Trip by Revolution. Revolution is a venture capital firm founded by Steve Case, founder of AOL. The Rise of the Rest Road Trip is dedicated to highlighting innovation found at startups across the U.S. – not just in Silicon Valley.

Since 2014, Steve Case and Revolution have visited over three dozen cities. In each city, they host a pitch competition to showcase local startups. The winner of each competition takes home a $100,000 investment from the Rise of the Rest Seed Fund.

The Revolution team kicked off the eighth Rise of the Rest Road Trip in Orlando, Florida. While in the City Beautiful, the big red bus visited Orlando-based Golf Channel, EA Sports, Starter Studio, and Fattmerchant before heading to the Orlando pitch competition.

Fattmerchant’s team was thrilled to host Steve Case, Revolution, and their guests. Fattmerchant CEO and Founder Suneera Madhani shared her experience of getting funding and leading a startup in Orlando, a city that doesn’t often get national attention for its innovative technology culture.

According to Case, 75% of all venture capital goes to companies based in California, New York, and Massachusetts. He explained that because of this, innovators and entrepreneurs feel pressured to move to Silicon Valley or New York City to get funding. This is causing a “brain drain” across the rest of the U.S. That’s where the Rise of the Rest Road Trip comes in.

Following his talk to the Fattmerchant office, Case had to board the bus to head out to the Orlando pitch competition, where Suneera served on the panel of judges. But before he left, we asked him for one favor: for him to ring the legendary Fattmerchant gong that gets rung for every company milestone.

We wish the best of luck to the startups competing in the Rise of the Rest Road Trip 8.0. Following Orlando, the tour can be found at Florida’s Space Coast, Tampa Bay, Miami, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Find out more about the tour at
